TEL AVIV — The Palestinian newspaper Al Hayat Al Jadida, considered the official publication of the Palestinian Authority, is calling on Palestinians to prepare for a “confrontation” with Israel over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In an editorial published on Wednesday, the newspaper stated that U.S. participation in the so-called peace process has come down to the “ugly” veto it cast in the Security Council on a draft resolution aimed at rescinding Trump’s Jerusalem recognition.

The newspaper also claimed that by defending Israel in international institutions, the U.S. has made itself a branch of Israeli policy and “the definition of the U.S. as a superpower is in doubt, if it’s not already a definition worthy of ridicule.”

The Palestinian publication stated that Palestinian reconciliation must be completed, referring to a unity deal with Hamas terrorists.

“We are standing before the greatest force of racism. We need to unite in order to reach our goals and liberation,” read the editorial. “We must stand united against Trump’s declaration. This is the time for confrontation.”

Meanwhile, informed Palestinian security sources told Breitbart Jerusalem that there is an ongoing debate between those in Abbas’s Fatah party who want to escalate the recent wave of confrontations and those in charge of the PA’s security services. The latter continue to work closely with their colleagues on the Israeli side and the U.S. as well, and don’t want to escalate the confrontations beyond the current boiling point, the sources say.

A member of Fatah’s Central Committee confirmed to Breitbart Jerusalem that the organization’s leadership is divided regarding the continuation of the so-called struggle against Israel and that Fatah chair and PA President Mahmoud Abbas hasn’t expressed a clear position in favor of either side, waiting for the diplomatic options to be exhausted before making a decision.
