Composer Terence Blanchard Took BlacKkKlansman To The Next Level — Production Value Video Series

A filmmaker known for forging lasting bonds with members of his team, Spike Lee always has had an eye for talent. Bringing New Orleans-based musician Terence Blanchard in to play trumpet on his early scores—and sometimes conduct—the filmmaker subsequently would find in Blanchard an invaluable key collaborator. Lees longtime composer—who most recently joined him on the Cannes-premiering BlacKkKlansman—Blanchard is an artist who understands his sensibility, effortlessly bringing forth colors to support his worlds and the stories transpiring within them.

In an eclectic career, the Grammy winner has played in orchestras and jazz bands and composed for films, operas and Broadway shows. If theres a spine to be found—a unifying factor—it would have to be his work with Lee, which has taken him through films including Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Clockers, 25th Hour, Inside Man, Chi-Raq and now BlacKkKlansman over the course of nearly 30 years.

Starring notable breakout John David Washington, Adam Driver and Topher Grace, Lees latest tells the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first African American police officer in the Colorado Springs bureau, who managed to infiltrate the local branch of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, making a mockery of their hatred.

Working on BlacKkKlansman, Blanchard found an overarching challenge that had nothing to do with any particular scene. “I think it was the overall tone of the film. Where should the orchestra take over? Where should the orchestra lay back?” the composer reflects. “Theres that fine line between it being emotional and then being way over the top, and Im always very sensitive to that.”

The first guest of Deadlines Production Value Video Series (Oscars Edition), Blanchard sat down earlier this season to reflect on his career journey, and the preoccupations that inform his work. Speaking to his collaborations over the years with Lee, an iconic auteur, the composer offered insights into his thought process, when it comes to his films scores. “One of the things with Spikes movies is that the music takes on a narrative role. I dont have to worry so much about period and those types of things. He always will tell me, Its time for you to take us to the next level. And I know what he means by that,” Blanchard explains. “He wants the film to become bigger when we put the score in.”

For the artist, BlacKkKlansman was an “emotional rollercoaster ride.” Discussing a primary theme he wrote in service of that concept, Blanchard touched on an echoing effect embedded within the score, which sprang from his personal life—specifically, from his roots in the church. “The reason why the echo thing comes in with the orchestration, thats always something that I view as something that comes from the church—always,” he shares. “Its a call and response. Somebody will say something, and somebody else can totally relate. Because it hits them where theyve been struggling in their life, as well.”

With over 40 film scores under his belt, Blanchard came to the craft with the mentality of a jazz musician, who had composed for years for only five instruments, learning how to bring flair to more limited compositions. “Now, youre going to give me 70 [instruments], plus all the pre-production that I can do?” he marvels. “Its the most incredible job to have on the planet, I think.”

Writer Rips Ex-Gersh Agents After Network Meeting Canceled

UPDATED: Writer-producer Jorge Reyes had some harsh words for his former Gersh agents, claiming they canceled a meeting they’d scheduled for him with a Fox executive before he fired them and moved to the Verve agency last week.

“So Gersh found out I was going over to Verve &asked my mgr about it this morning,” he wrote on his Twitter feed Monday. “I had a meeting at Fox this afternoon. I get there, they told me the meeting was ‘cancelled by my mgmt company.’ When I checked, I found out it was Gersh calling to cancel my meeting.”

“The agents names at Gersh are Roy Ashton, David Rubin, & Shan Roy,” he continued. “I don’t know which one of those small motherfuckers did that, so they can all share the blame. If they did that, who’s to say they wouldn’t badmouth/talk shit to the execs I’ve already met?”

“I’ve alerted my management company & Verve. We also let the exec at Fox know what happened, who apologized to me & was shocked that Gersh did that.”

Reyes, a writer-producer on USA Network’s Queen of the South and creator of the Kevin Hill TV series that ran on UPN in the early 2000s, signed with Verve shortly after the agency signed the WGA’s new Code of Conduct.

In a statement Tuesday, Gersh said that it had “set these meetings several months ago before the strike when Mr. Reyes was a Gersh client. When the client signed with another agency, the meetings were removed from the books as is normal protocol. We wish Mr. Reyes the best.”

“I actually liked these guys before this,” Reyes tweeted of his former Gersh agents. “They dropped the ball on a couple of things pre ATA conflict. Verve was originally in the running when I signed with Gersh. When they signed the COC (Code of Conduct), I thought this was a good time to move, given my other concerns.”

“They don’t have to like that I moved,” he added. “But they were ALREADY fired, and in no position to cancel a meeting with an exec that wanted to meet me because of my writing. Now I’ll be fine. But this is vindictive, fucked up, & I wouldn’t put it past them to try & sabotage me.”

Added Reyes in his series of tweets: “BRING IT, MOTHERFUCKERS. I plan to email every exec I met and tell them this. Roy Ashton, David Rubin, Shan Roy. Remember the names. You come for me, you better not fucking miss.”

On Friday, Reyes tweeted that “I am now a Verve client. There had been discussions way previous to the WGA/ATA conflict, but now seemed as good a time as any for me. Looking forward to the other mid-level agencies coming to their senses for all of us soon. #WGASolidarity”

Here are his tweets:
