A man was arrested for the abduction and rape of a woman found chained in a basement, police say.

Michael Ciskiewic, 25, is charged with first-degree rape, assault, burglary, kidnapping, and menacing after the unnamed woman was found shackled in a basement of a home in Niagra Falls, New York on Sunday.

Authorities say Ciskiewic may have mowed the victims lawn and shoveled her snow, but they did not detail what the victims relationship to Ciskiewic was.

Niagra Falls Detective Captain Kelly Rizzo said Ciskiewic knocked on the victims door around 1am Sunday and attacked her.

Rizzo told the Niagra-Gazette: She was familiar with him to open the door, even at that late hour it seemed odd that he would be there but I think she felt comfortable enough.

Police said Ciskiewic may have done yard work in the victims neighborhood, which is how she may have known him (Picture: Facebook)

She probably wanted to see if he was OK and the attack happened as soon as she opened the door.

According to Rizzo, police received reports that the woman was missing from her house and used a dog to track her to a nearby home with blood leading up to the back door.

Authorities found her chained by the ankle in the basement with her wrists bound by tape and a sock stuffed in her mouth.

After removing the woman from the home, police surrounded the house. They used tear gas in the house and a 12-hour standoff ensued before they realized that Ciskiewic was not inside.

REUTERS: Drug developer Neurotrope Inc's shares tumbled nearly 80per cent on Monday after the company said its experimental treatment for Alzheimer's disease did not meet the main goal of a mid-stage study.

The treatment, Bryostatin-1, did not show any significant difference in patients after 13 weeks compared with those on placebo, the company said on Monday.

Neurotrope said it intends to conduct a complete review of the data to determine next steps in the treatment's development.

Alzheimer's disease, which affects parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language, is a progressive condition that could seriously disrupt a patient's ability to carry out daily activities.

Several drugmakers such as Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca Plc, Roche AG, Pfizer Inc, Merck and Co Inc and Johnson and Johnson have all pre
